The story of Ivy crew teams use of the word swing.
Ivy League crew is often spoken of as the most demanding collegiate sport. A term was used in a recent story we heard of the Yale crew team describing something called "Swing". As in, "Did you all swing today in practice?"
It means that all eight blades of the eight crew members go into the water exactly at the same instant. Power is applied at exactly the precise same moment. When it works, it demonstrably increases effectiveness. The great athletes experience "Swing" frequently. For we mortals, it comes less.
In collaboration, it also shows up. Those moments when a group knows, and we mean knows that they are at peak shared effectiveness. And then, poop, it is gone.
